DIY Magnet Board: Step-by-Step Tutorial and Ideas

Looking for a way to add some personalization to your art/craft booth, shop set-up, or just want a unique way to display your wicked magnet collection (besides the fridge)? Well, if you’ve been looking in stores then you’ve probably been running into the same problem- one mundane magnet board after another.

You know the ones - plain, uninteresting, and lacking any personality. It's as if they're haunting you with their blandness, lurking in the shadows of the store aisles, waiting to bore unsuspecting shoppers…

I share your agony. But fear not, I have a solution that's devilishly simple - DIY! All it takes is a few materials and a pinch of magic, and you can bring your magnet board to life.

Whether you're looking to spruce up your abode, show off your macabre magnet collection, or display your handmade creations in an eye-catching way, this project is the perfect vessel to inject your personality into!

Magnet Board Materials:

  • A piece of sheet metal (depending on frame size)

  • Picture frame

  • Spray paint

    • Make sure the can specifically says the paint sticks to metal.

  • Marker (optional)

  • Measuring tape

  • Sheet metal shears (handheld)

  • Safety gloves

All of these items can be found either at your local home improvement store or online. You can also find unique picture frames at your local thrift stores!

How to Make a DIY Magnet Board:

  • First, remove the glass from the picture frame. Measure the length and width of the glass to find out what size to cut the metal sheet. Put on your safety gloves.

  • Then, mark the measurements on the sheet metal and carefully cut the sheet to the desired size with the shears. Check to make sure the cut metal fits in the frame.

  • Next, paint the metal with your desired color according to the instructions on the spray paint can. Let it dry completely.

  • Once the metal is dry, just pop it into the empty picture frame. If you need more sturdiness, use a piece of cardboard behind the metal.

  • Finally, draw designs/names on the board if you want to. Then, throw some magnets on your new magnet board and they’re ready for display!

DIY Magnet Board Tips:

  • I used a thrifted frame for this project which I recommend to help save a few bucks.

  • Pick a frame with an easel-style back for a free-standing display.

  • Be extremely careful when cutting metal and dealing with metal that has been cut! Those edges are wicked sharp!

Magnet Boards Ideas:

  • Display to-do lists, notes, and menus or dinner ideas

  • Inspiration board

  • Magnet display for craft shows/events

  • Showing off your cool magnet collection

  • Customizable kids’ room decor
